Browse Accession sidebar sorted by date?

Currently, the sidebar for browsing accessions is sorted by most to least accessions per year. Instead, it might be more helpful (or at least I tend to need this view more often) if the years are in chronological order. Thanks!

v2.6.0: accessions are now sorting by date, with "unknown" at the top.

Ok, adding the alpha sort would be great! Thank you!

Hi , I'm thinking that adding an alphabetical sort for all facets will effectively be a numerical sort for the dates, since the dates don't have letters.

For example, if a user were to select the alpha sort instead of the count sort, then the subject facets will be ordered alphabetically, and the date facets will be sorted numerically.

Hi , thanks for following up on this. Just to clarify, are you meaning to propose a numerical (not only alphabetical) sort for all search facets? It may be nice to have that option, but accessions and possibly events seem to be in the most direct need for sorting by date due to their nature. Again, this ticket is specifically referring to the left side panel. Thanks!

Looking at the code, all search facets in the sidebar are displayed in order from most entity matches to least matches as a primary sort, and then alphabetical as a secondary sort.

This is true for the Accession year facet discussed in this ticket as it uses a software component shared by all facets for all entity types.

While it's possible to change the sort for just the accession year facet, doing so by adding code for a special case just for accession dates feels hacky and may affect software maintainability down the line.

An alternative is to change the sort order for ALL search facets to be have an alphabetical primary sort. This change would not require a special case for just accession dates. The downside is that the effects of this might be too much of a change.

Another alternative is to add some sort of config option to select between a primary alpha sort or a primary hit count sort for all facets, as previously discussed. This would be more complex, but I think only moderately so, as long as the sort selection would apply to all facets at the same time.

If we agree to try to avoid adding a special case just for accession dates, then I think the next step is to do a bit more research into changing the sort order for everything to get more clarity on how much work it would be to add a sort order toggle.
