Masks are required for all in-person elements of the ArchivesSpace member forum. Submissions are now open for presentation proposals for the in-person meeting on August 24, 2022. Submissions are being reviewed on a rolling basis and everyone attending is encouraged to consider submitting a proposal. Sessions will not be livestreamed and presenters must be in Boston to present. |
ArchivesSpace will be holding the in-person portion of its 8th Annual Member Forum on August 24, 2022, in the Commonwealth Room on the third floor of the Sheraton Boston Hotel. Just as in previous years, this will be a free opportunity for staff from ArchivesSpace member institutions to meet and share information with each other and the program team about all things ArchivesSpace.
We are thrilled to be able to meet in-person ArchivesSpace users for the first time since 2019. The specifics of this half-day program continue to be shaped but the goal is to hold a casual and engaging meeting where members can highlight the work they have undertaken at their own organizations over the past few years to implement ArchivesSpace, improve practices and show off new tools or workshops (← is this the intended word?) they've developed. We encourage everyone who plans to attend to consider submitting a proposal to present at the forum.
In addition to this half day, in-person meeting, we will hold two virtual workshops the following week on August 30th and 31st. Registration for these workshops is for ArchivesSpace members only and registration for each workshop is separate from registration for this in-person meeting.Panel

9:15am-9:35am Broad Vocabulary: Implementing Alternate Vocabularies for Improved Access and Description New York University employs Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) for its breadth of topics, but also recognizes its inherent biases, slow nature to change, and conceptual gaps for specific areas. Focused subject term lists, such as Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) or Homosaurus, provide opportunities to address gaps in concepts, address the damage done by harmful subject headings, and ultimately, enhance the discovery of archival collections. This presentation will focus on the implementation of alternate vocabularies using ArchivesSpace, including a practical overview of system functionality, local policy considerations, an examination of the role of controlled access points alongside narrative archival description, and an affirmation that we are responsible for our metadata and its impact on our staff and users.

This presentation will give an overview of progress on the project, while discussing logistical issues in regards to barcoding collections for future access. Taylor will also discuss NC State's vision for the project at its conclusion, such as using the space calculator tool in ArchivesSpace to improve physical collection management capabilities.
