Checking in

All

All sub-teams have submitted workplans and the Council leaders are meeting to discuss. There are also Council retrospectives available.

For October TAC is trying out breakout rooms for part of the meeting where sub-teams can meet to work on something together. Getting some concentrated time to work together outside of their own meetings might taken some of the scheduling/bandwidth pressure off the group members.

UAC now has presentations scheduled for the remaining meetings for the year, but may also do some of the ideas suggested for TAC like demos or breakouts. Jessica had very positive feedback on the Testing sub-team training Austin did - thought it provided a good understanding of how testing works. Might be a good topic for the UAC October meeting.

There were a lot of responses for the coffee chat event so it should be a good size group.

Testing Vice Lead opening has been filled.

Fostering leadership within the Councils - great strides have been made in recent years to provide resources to support leaders in their roles, but Vice Lead vacancies demonstrate that there still seems to be reluctance to step up - is there anything else we should be doing?

All

Many leaders within the Councils feel that they accidentally came into leadership roles and weren’t necessarily planning to be in them when they came onto the Councils. It would be great to make it a little more clear when people are recruited/volunteer for the Councils that there are many leadership opportunities and stepping up to a leadership role will be needed for most people on the Councils at some time during their term. We should convey that it’s a good thing!

We could clarify the work load for the different positions on different teams, including the distribution of work for people in different roles. The Council handbook would be a good place for this info.

It’s ideal that a sub-team leader distributes work to their team members, rather than does it themselves. This is really hard, but in the end makes things run more smoothly and provides for better transitions from term to term. We should support leads in this effort.

Could there be a Virtual Member Forum presentation about skill building or about past leaders experiences of leadership in the Councils? Could we do more to document what people are doing as they are doing it? This might be a way to make people more comfortable about leadership.

This might also make a good SAA presentation, or an ArchivesSpace alumni event. Rachel especially has an interest in an alumni initiative/event. (Christine will send the spreadsheet form of the Wall of Honor towards this.)
