FY2013/14 Call for Nominations for Board of Trustees

(Transmitted to ArchivesSpace Charter Members on Wed, 31 July 2013)

Dear ArchivesSpace Charter Member:

On behalf of the ArchivesSpace project partners, I want to thank you and your institution for choosing to become a Charter Member of the ArchivesSpace organization.  The healthy development and longevity of ArchivesSpace requires the support and energetic participation of the institutions that are using and benefitting from the application.

I am pleased to report that the ArchivesSpace organization has started the process of establishing its governance bodies by appointing a Special Nominating Committee for the ArchivesSpace Board of Trustees.  This committee has the single responsibility of constructing a slate of candidates for the five open seats on the Board of Trustees.  Members of the Special Nominating Committee are:

  • Carol Mandel (New York University)
  • Brian Schottlaender (University of California, San Diego)
  • Paula Kauffman  (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign)
  • Julie Grob (University of Houston)
  • Jacob Nadal (Brooklyn Historical Society)
  • Colleen McFarland (Mennonite Church USA)

As you may recall from information distributed earlier, the ArchivesSpace Board of Trustees is charged with providing oversight  for ArchivesSpace, including fiscal oversight; approval of development priorities; and oversight of the User Advisory Council and Technical Advisory Council.  To meet the needs of a broad and diverse membership in a balanced and equitable way, the ArchivesSpace Board of Trustees will be composed of eleven members:

9 voting members:

5 elected members, one from each of the five membership categories;
3 standing members, one representing each of the three project partners: New York University, UC San Diego, and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; and
1 member representing the LYRASIS management team.

2 ex officio members:

the ArchivesSpace Program Manager, and
1 member of the LYRASIS Board of Directors.

With this letter, I am pleased to invite you to nominate a candidate for the Board of Trustees representing the Charter Members within your membership category (see the list of ArchivesSpace Charter Members included at the bottom of this message and attached).  Nominees are expected to have administrative and fiscal oversight experience, characteristics typical of a Director or Associate Director.  Nominations must be received by August 7, and each nomination should be supported by a statement that briefly describes the nominee’s interest in and qualifications for serving on the ArchivesSpace Board of Trustees.  An election will be held soon after the slate of candidates is constructed.  We are intending to constitute the board by the end of August and to convene its first meeting in September.  As suggested above, one of the first tasks for the Board will be to seek nominations from the Charter Members for membership on the User and Technical Advisory councils.

I look forward to receiving a nomination from you.  Please send it to Bradley Westbrook (brad.westbrook@lyrasis.org), the ArchivesSpace Program Manager, who will collect nominations on behalf of the nominating committee.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this process.

Cordially,

Carol A. Mandel
Project Partner, and Convenor,
ArchivesSpace Special Nominating Committee for Board of Trustees
Dean, Division of Libraries, New York University
